In December 2001 Monsanto inaugurated, at the Petrochemical Pole of Camaçari, the first plant of the Company designed to produce raw materials for the herbicide Roundup in South America. The investment is equivalent to US$ 500 millions; US$ 350 millions were spent in this initial phase. The Camaçari Plant, the largest unit of Monsanto installed out of the United States, is also the only Monsanto plant manufacturing raw materials for the Roundup production line.

The new plant produces PCL3 (Phosphorus Trichloride), DSIDA (DiSodic Imino DiAcetic Acid) and PIA (Phosphonomethyl IminoDiAcetic Acid), the core raw materials for the manufacture of Roundup, a market leader within its category and one of the most known trade marks amongst farmers. The production is directed to Monsanto units installed in São José dos Campos (SP), Zarate (Argentina) and Antwerp (Belgium); in the past those units received raw materials from the United States.

The Company started the civil works for the new plant in January 2000. The total area of the unit is equivalent to 631,000 square meters, including 200,000 square meters of constructed area. Upon completion of the two phases, it is expected a total of 1,400 job places in the region, including direct (350) and indirect (1050) employments. During the peak phases of the construction the total number of individuals working at the job site reached 4,500.

With this plant in operation, Monsanto now contributes with approximately US$ 300 millions for the Brazilian commercial balance, avoiding the importation of U$ 150 millions of raw materials, therefore generating the same amount in exportations. The main criterion for the selection of Bahia as the location for such investment was the infrastructure existing within the state. Manpower, raw materials and utilities (such as water, vapor and electricity power) are available at the Petrochemical Pole; a company internationally renowned for the quality of its effluent treatment is installed at the Pole; logistics include two options for maritime transportation - Aratu and Salvador.
