Monsanto and D&PL Invest in Scott Learning Center Customers to See Elite Genetics, Innovative Technologies & Practices

MEMPHIS, TN (February 8, 2008) – Monsanto and it’s Delta and Pine Land business are creating a new research center to provide producers, dealers and others with a facility to help give people a better understanding of its business. The Portfolio Showcase and Learning Center in Scott, Miss., will showcase the various technologies Monsanto is developing, Delta & Pine Land’s portfolio and various agronomic practices.

“We want to use our Scott location as an agronomic knowledge center. A place producers and retailers, as well as others involved in the industry, can come and learn about our technologies and the agronomics of growing corn, cotton and soybeans in the South,” says Kevin Eblen, Delta & Pine Land Business Lead.

Monsanto has committed more than $1.25 million for the rebuilding and renovation process of the facility. The majority of the investment will focus on upgrades for the current Scott Community Center and neighboring fields so a variety of tests can be conducted and showcased.

“With the Monsanto acquisition of D&PL, we can showcase cotton genetics and technologies, as well as the corn and soybean business,” says Chism Craig, Scott Learning Center Manager. “The Scott location has a great history of hosting customers for the cotton business. We will be able to take our program to the next level by including all of the major crops in this region and providing a glimpse of the technologies we have in our pipeline. We will showcase the Asgrow, Deltapine, DeKalb and Roundup brands as well as the full trait portfolio. ”

Among the new, exciting technologies to be showcased year-round at the new facility:

  • Elite germplasm in cotton, corn and soybeans
  • Insecticide traits in corn and cotton
  • Herbicide traits in cotton and soybeans
  • Drought-tolerance traits in corn
  • Value added traits in soybeans
  • Agronomic systems and trials like irrigation systems, tillage practices, weed and insect control

As southern producers plant a more diverse crop mix, Delta & Pine Land’s business is becoming more diverse, as well. Craig says this range of products provides growers with the best technology and genetics in cotton, corn and soybeans.

That connection with customers is something Eblen points to as a cornerstone of D&PL and the business moving forward.

“Monsanto’s focus is solely on agriculture. As a company, we can only be successful if the farmers buying our products are successful,” says Eblen. “This investment in a learning center is a further investment in the success of our customers, as well as our business, and we’re excited about what this can offer us in the future.”

Renovations and upgrades to the Scott Learning Center should be completed by July 2008.
