Corporate Responsibility

Investing in Our People

The Monsanto Pledge acknowledges the importance of a positive, empowering culture that allows employees to achieve their highest potential, to embrace shared goals, and to support each other along the way. Our Pledge commitments guide our public behavior. They also provide a framework for interaction between leadership and employees. Ultimately, all Monsanto people are responsible for the company's success.

People Strategy Raises Our Competitive Advantage
Monsanto's people strategy is tied to our business strategy. It is designed to help us fulfill our Pledge to create a great place to work. It advances our ability to attract, develop and retain the talent we need to achieve our business objectives. It also creates a high standard of excellence for our people processes and enables us to measure the effectiveness of those processes.

We strive to select, develop, and retain employees who exhibit five global competencies: relationships and networks, courage and candor, agility, initiative and foresight, and results orientation. We created new interview guides based upon these competencies to ensure consistent interview processes worldwide, and we have created a People Leader Learning Series to help people managers and team leaders foster success among their direct reports. In addition, to help networks and cross-functional teams work more effectively, we offer tools for decision-making, goal setting and conflict resolution.

Our commitment to diversity is central to our people strategy. To sustain and extend our business across all world areas, we need diverse business perspectives and the flexibility to work with a variety of people wherever we conduct business. Toward that goal, we encourage and support a variety of employee-organized affinity groups and people teams in functional and technical areas. A common focus of these teams is ongoing professional development and technical education.

Benefits and Compensation Support Our Strategy
We believe that employee compensation, recognition, and benefits are integral to our business success. Our compensation and benefits philosophy is to provide competitive rewards to attract and retain the best talent and to foster a greater sense of ownership in the company. We have an incentive reward program at the individual, team and business levels. We also realize that people are most productive and happy when they have time and latitude to enjoy life outside of the company with family and friends. To encourage a good balance between work and home, in many locations we offer flexible hours, job sharing, a generous vacation policy, and in some places on-site day care and fitness centers.1
